This started out as all about the dress. I'm going to post another image of just the dress and no BG that's much larger to view. Sorry for the watermark but I worked hard on this one.

Wow. This is pretty awesome. The finished dress looks great, and the background is just amazing. I also like how you added the flower petals to both the foreground and background. They really help in enhancing the depth of this image. :3.
On a side note, I saw the description of your image without the background about this version's feeling too dark to you. Have you tried adding an additional layer on top of the layer(s) that make up the background, including the layers that you used for shading, and adding a gradient that goes from a bright color (Red, orange, and/or yellow feels like they'd fit in with the atmosphere to me.) to transparent? Doing so and fiddling around with the layer's transparency, blending options, etc. might help you. :3.
